Why are we so obsessed with ’the one’ as a culture?

The concept of searching for our “better half” is inundated into us, perpetuated by our culture. You see it in every Nicholas Sparks movie and I’m a sucker for them all. There’s no question Noah and Allie were soulmates in The Notebook. But in reality, is believing in "the one" a Biblical/healthy idea?
